Located in the center of Romania, in Sibiu, the ASTRA National Museum Complex is the most important ethnomuseum institution in Romania. Conceived under the auspices of the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture of the Romanian People – an institution founded in 1861 – ASTRA Museum – then the Association Museum – opened its first exhibition on August 19, 1905.

The museum was born from the desire of Transylvanian Romanians to define their own culture. , in the ethnic conglomerate of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and against the background of the cultural emancipation of all the peoples of Central and South-Eastern Europe.
